The French girls I met at Wet Willy's:) This was during my final night on Ambergris Caye. I went out with one of the staff from Belizean Shores and Emerson & I met these girls from Paris. The girl in the blue dress was called Monique and is studying Marine Science back in France so we had a lot on common. She wants to visit Victoria and watch the Orcas in the wild, I told her anytime!

Here are a number of images from my recent visit to Ambergris Caye, Belize. I had a few days off work and decided to visit the most northerly Caye in Belize and the top tourist destination for visitors to Belize.

My first two nights were spent at Banana Beach Resort http://www.bananabeach.com/ a real neat resort just south of San Pedro town center. I had a great time here spending the day snorkeling at Hol Chan & Shark Ray Alley and chillin by the pool. Whilst I was there I met a real cool local Gal called Anna who worked in the resteraunt and bar. Anna is a Mestizo, one of the many cultures that make up Belize. TheMestizo are of mixed Spanish/Amerindian ancestory and most moved to Belize during the 1840's to escape the Caste wars in the Yucatan. We had a lot of fun during my stay at Banana Beach and Anna took me to some of the best night spots in San Pedro:)

After Banana Beach I moved north of San Pedro to a resort called Belizean Shores http://www.belizeanshores.com/ and stayed here free of charge for two nights, its not what you know but who yu know:) Belizean Shores is located about 3 miles north of San Pedro and is a beautiful all enclusive resort with the barrier reef a short paddle away. The resort had an amazing pool with a sunken bar, where I spent one or two hours;) I also sailed whilst I was here, as well as more snorkeling, kayaking and even some scuba diving.

Whilst at Belizean Shores I met a gorgeous young lady from Memphis called Julie and we really hit it off. Julie is a enviromental engineer in the US and highly intelligent, so not sure what she saw in me except my handsome features, sexy british accent and sense of humor, oh and of course my humble attitude;) Well that is what she told me anyway:) We had a great time together and will try to keep in touch.

My final 2 days and night was spent at the breathtaking Coco Beach Resort http://cocobeachbelize.com/ and again I stayed here free of charge! This place was incredible and I could not believe I was staying in such a high end resort, I defiently saved the best for last:)

I had an awesome time on Ambergris, met some incredible people (always the best part about traveling) and saw some amazing sights. One day I hope to return to Ambergris Caye!

In early April I got chance to visit Guetamala and the famous Mayan Ruins at Tikal. It was a breathtaking experience and a place I had been eager to visit!

Apart from the amazing Mayan Ruins Tikal also has some incredible wildlife including Howler and Spider Monkeys, Toucans, Turkey Vultures and even Crocodiles:)

On March 12th I got up early to head to Belize City and then head out to Half Moon Caye. My day began at 4.30am and it proved to be a long but unforgettable day. The weather was gorgeous, which meant perfect conditions for the 55 mile boat ride to Half Moon Caye.

After 2 hours we reached the paradise Island of Half Moon Caye and our guests soon settled into the relaxed pace of our camp. As we reached the dock a Nurse Shark was spotted and was soon joined by a couple more. A couple of Sting Rays could also be seen close by. Some guests just wanted to chill whilst others wanted to get right into the kayaking and snorkeling.

On my return I asked the boat to stop at Black Bird Caye (Part of Turneffe Atoll, the largest Island Atoll in Belize) where the Oceanic Society have a base and where Katheryn works (the girl I met a few weeks ago). I did not have long to visit as it was late in the day but it was nice to see Kat again and she was pleasantly surprised to see me and the gift of Dr.Peppers I brought for her:)

The boat eventually reached Belize City around 6.30pm. After unloading the boat and grabbing a bit to eat at the only Subway in Belize, Rio and I headed back to Dangriga and eventually reached home at 10.30pm!!!! So much for this being my day off but it was worth the effort for another chance to visit Half Moon Caye and I was a tired happy chappie;)

A couple of weeks ago I went out with Tim (IEC's founding director) and Bashat (our boat Cpt) for a day exploring the Cayes and to take some photo's for Island Expeditions next brochure. Tim wanted his best model for the shoot, but had to settle for me instead;) I don't think I did a bad job though, especially considering I had no team of makeup artist and stylist to make me look pretty for the camera but my natural beauty shone through:)

It was great to be out on the water kayaking and snorkeling in the Coral Reef. I saw some amazing marine life within the Coral Reef including a Trigger Fish, Dog Snapper, Barracuda and a Manatee in the distance. Life in Belize is real tough:)

A few weeks ago we had a Coral Jag trip in the Cockscomb reserve and here are a few pictures I took during the day. I went there to help bring in the group after they had been on the river for 4 days.

On the way in to the take out spot I spotted a beautiful Scarlet MaCaw and managed to get a nice photo of it. This was such a thrill for me as I had not seen one this close in the wild before. They are an incredible bird with amazing colours.

I also saw an Iguana, deer and roadside Hawk but as I was driving with guests I did not have time to take a snapshot.

The Crystal Maiden, was a young woman of about 20. It is believed she was clubbed and left for dead, and with the passage of time she has been cemented to the floor in a layer of brown calcite. (To reach her final resting place, you must climb aluminum ladders mounted on a sheer rock face!)

Here are a few more pictures of the ATM Cave, this time inside the cave and shows some of the artifacts, skeletons, skulls and cave formations that can be found in the cave. The artifacts have been here undisturbed for over 1200 years!

The Mayans used the ATM cave for various rituals and ceremonies including sacrafice to the gods. Daring not to stumble so that their torches would not get wet or even be extinguished; fearing that the spirits of the darkness would they dared themselves deeper and deeper into the realms of Xibalba, the Maya underworld, to ask their Gods for help. With every step the fear growing more and more, but they must carry out the ceremony. Come with us and discover where their footsteps trod over a thousand years ago.

Last Tuesday I headed to San Ignacio with Pacz Tours http://www.pacztours.net/ so that I could take the ATM Cave tour the following Day. This had been one of the tours I had been wanting to do since I arrived in Belize and I was stoked that I was finally going to see this incredible Mayan site for myself.

On arrival in San Ignacio I met a Marine Biologist named Katheryn who works for the Oceanic Society doing Dolphin Research on Turniffee. Over a few beers Katheryn and I soon discovered we were both doing the ATM tour in the monring:)

It was first discovered in the late 80's and although archaeologists have examined the cave, it has not been excavated in the traditional sense up to this time. Aside from the geological wonders are the numerous relics of the Ancient Maya Culture. These were ritually deposited in caves, to beckon rains and overcome long periods of drought. Over 200 ceramic vessels litter the chamber of Tunichil Cave. The meshing of cultural history and geology forms an unrivalled natural museum, a gallery like one never seen before. Apart from the ceramic vessels there are also a number of Skulls and Skeletons to be found in the chambers of this cave complex.

The ATM cave is one of the top Mayan Sites not only in Belize but in the world and is a breathtaking experience that I can highly recommend to anyone visiting Belize.

Fishing Trip and Dolphin Encounter!

This Barracuda was the first one caught during the day and was actually caught on a jigging line after biting the other fish in the picture, 2 for the price of 1:)

A couple of weeks ago during my day off I went fishing with Alex Usher, Crocket and Mani (one of the NA guides for IEC) and had a long but exhilerating day on the water. We caught a large number of fish, especially Barracuda, most of which we donated to the local hospital.

The highlight for me was when we saw a pod of BottleNose Dolphins nearby who soon came and layed in the bow wave of the boat. A few of the Dolphins were also surfing our stern wave and leaping out of the water, it was a fantastic sight!

Of course, a few beers and Rum & Cokes were downed throughout the day. On the way home we also stopped off at Tobacco Caye and had a couple of drinks to celebrate a successful day on the water:) And as all great fishing tales go, the biggest fish of the day got away!

A few weeks ago 2 of my friends from Victoria popped by for a visit. Trev & Brad ended up going camping on Tobacco Caye with two of the North American guides, Cait & Dave and the four of them ended up paddling back to Dangriga on the Monday. The windy conditions made for a fun trip!

Ragga Gal is the sister ship of Ragga King, which is the boat we sailed on and is slightly larger than Ragga Gal. Both boats are operated by Raggamuffin Tours.

Here are some pictures from the sailing tour and various snorkeling spots near Caye Caulker. Michelle & I snorkeled at Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley and Sergeants Caye during our time at Caye Caulker and we saw some amazing marine wildlife including Nurse Sharks, Sting Rays, Logger Head and Sea Turtles and countless coral fish. Belize has some amazing spots to snorkel and has the second longest Barrier Reef in the world. The water is warm and crystal clear, so it is always a joy to snorkel in this pristine marine environment.

The famous Mr. Chocolate who is responsible for setting up the nature reserve a Swallow Caye.

One of Michelles main reasons for visiting Belize was to see the Manatee. When I was at Caye Caulker last year I went out with Mr. Chocolate who is responsible for setting up the Swallow Caye Reserve that provides a safe haven for the Manatee. So when Michelle told me she wanted to go on a tour I contacted Chocolate and he remembered me from last year. We had a great day on the water and saw many Manatee. The highlight of the tour was when Michelle reached out her hand and a Manatee came so close and allowed her to stroke its back and tail, she was thrilled!

Apart from seeing the Manatee, Chocolate also takes his guests to a couple of neat snorkeling spots (see seperate post) and the cost of this tour is well worth the money.

West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus). Manatees in Belize are Antillean Manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus), a subspecies of the West Indian Manatee (the Florida Manatee is a separate subspecies, Trichechus manatus latirostris). Belize is home to the largest known concentration of Antillean Manatees in the wider Caribbean.

Antillean manatees are found in rivers, bays, canals, estuaries and coastal areas that are at least 3.25 feet deep with lots of sea grass and other vegetation (along with vegetation, Antillean manatees have been known to eat fish from nets). Manatees prefer water temperatures over 70o F (21o C). Manatees can survive in fresh water, salt water and brackish water -- and move easily from one to another.

The 2 sites below give some excellent information about the Manatee and Swallow Caye. I am now a member of the Friends of Swallow Caye, a group that is working to save the Manatee in Belize.

In January I got to have a few days off and so I headed to the beautiful Island of Caye Caulker. I stayed at a lovely guest house called Jaguar Morning Star owned by a Joanne (originally from Alberta) and her Belizean husband Ali (better known as Jaguar). They have 2 rooms on the top floor with a large balcony that has excellent views of Caye Caulker, plus they have a Cabana available.

I arrived on the Wednesday afternoon and as soon as I had settled in I took advantage of the balcony and sun bathed whilst reading a good book. By mid afternoon I was already feeling relaxed and in tourist mode:) Then my next door neighbor returned and sat out on the balocony and much to my pleasant surprise she was a beautiful girl from France. I discovered her name was Michelle and although she was a little stand offish at first soon warmed to my stunning British charm and winning personality;) Actually the ice breaker was when I found out Michelle was from the small coastal town of Port Grimaud in the South of France (not far from St. Tropez) and a place I used to visit every summer when I was a kid. Port Grimaud is a lovely place that was styled after Venice. So there I am on Caye Caulker in Belize and meet a girl from Port Grimaud, what a small world it really is and Michelle was amazed I even knew where Port Grimaud was let alone that I'd been there. I've always been a sucker for the French accent and French Girls, they just have a certain Je ne sais quoi :)

Michelle and I spent the next few days enjoying Caye Caulker and the food, sandy beaches, great nightlife, and various snorkeling tours (see seperate posts). We went out with Mr. Chocolate to see the Manatee at Swallow Caye Reserve (I went out with Nicole on this tour last year) and Michelle was thrilled as one of her main reasons for visiting Belize was to see the Manatee. Apart from the Manatee tour we also went on a sailing and snorkeling tour with Ragamuffin Tours and snorkeled at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, which was an incredible expereince!

After Half Moon Caye at Lightouse, Caye Caulker is my second favourite place in Belize and I wish I could have spent more time there. As for Michelle, she is currently taking a break from her studies and is touring Central & South America, before continueing on to tour North America (including Canada), South Africa, Asia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, lucky Girl!! The trip Michelle is doing is exactly the same tour I am planning on doing in a few years after I've finished working in Belize for the winter. Michelle and I are hoping to hook up again when she visits Canada, although she has a lot of relatives to see in Quebec and especially Montreal.

Whatever the future holds we had an unforgettable time in Caye Caulker and I am glad our paths crossed, even if it was for the briefest of time! Au Revoir Michelle and Au Revoir Caye Caulker.

Tribute to Andy Palacio, who passed away on Jan 19th, 2008.

Andy Palacio in concert who died Jan 19th at the young age of 47, R.I.P!

Belize’s most internationally recognized musician, Andy Palacio, finally succumbed to heart and respiratory failure, the result of a series of strokes. His death occurred around nine Saturday night. Belizeans were not unprepared for the loss as from the middle of last week Andy sought medical attention following complaints of dizziness and blurred vision. He was hospitalised on Wednesday and on Thursday, flown to the United States for treatment. Although scheduled for admission to the University of Chicago Medical Center, when the air ambulance stopped in Mobile, Alabama for customs and immigration clearance, Palacio lost consciousness and was hospitalised there on life support. With nothing more that could be done for him, his family finally requested that Andy be returned home to spend his final days. In the last year Andy saw his album Watina hit the top of the European world music charts and, along with producer Ivan Duran, won the prestigious WOMEX Award from the World Music Expo. He was also named an Artist for Peace by UNESCO and bestowed with the Order of Meritorious Service by the Belize Government. On Friday morning Andy’s memory will be honoured by the National Institute of Culture and History and a tribute concert will be held on Friday night. He will receive an official funeral along with a traditional Garifuna burial in his birth place, the village of Barranco, on Saturday. Palacio, forty-seven, is survived by his mother, a brother and sister, five children and two grandchildren.

I had the pleasure of watching this incredible musician in concert on Nov 17th, when he performed a free concert in Dangriga. It is a sad day for all Belizeans and for those people who have embraced the culture of Belize.

I was fortunate enough to visit our base at Half Moon Caye twice in the last 4-5 weeks. The first visit was to help with logistics of bringing in a large group of students in from HMC. This group from a University in Seattle had been out at the Caye for a few weeks and were returning home just in time for Christmas. I went out on the large boat with supplies for the staff that were staying out there to watch over the camp for a few days. This student group are studying Marine Biology and the marine diversity at Lighthouse is a magical place for anyone who has a passion for the wondrous creatures found in the oceans of the Caribbean and the coral reefs that support this myriad of marine life. All the group agreed they had an unforgettable experience at Half Moon Caye.

In early January I returned to Half Moon Caye again, this time to close down our camp for a few weeks. Our journey out to the Caye was an eventful one as the winds had picked up during the worst cold front Belize had seen since 1992. Not that the waves and wind bothered me, in fact I slept during most of the 2 hour trip to the Caye:) Due to the cold front we ended up staying an extra day to avoid the high winds and large waves, a good idea since out journey to Dangriga would take 3 hours in a small 25' skiff! Even when we did brave the seas the next day there were still a number of large swells that made for an exciting ride!!!!

The Paca, known as the gibnut in Belize, is a nocturnal rodent. Inhabiting the forest floor, this solitary animal feeds on fallen fruit, leaves and some tubers dug from the ground. The gibnut is most often found near water and are found throughout many habitats of Belize, from river valleys to swamps to dense tropical forest.
The gibnut is the most prized game animal of Belize and the Neotropics. They are easily hunted by day with dogs which can sniff out the paca's dens, or during the night with headlamps while they feed. While thriving in Belize's many protected areas, the paca has been hunted to extinction in many parts of its range from Mexico to Southern Brazil.

Here are the forest Cabanas that guests stay in. They are rustic but one of my favorite places to stay in Belize.

Harpy Eagles are considered to be one of the world’s largest eagles. This eagle has hind talons that can be as large as those of a grizzly bear. However, it can only fly with prey weighing less than one half its own body weight. Apart from the Jaguars, the Harpy Eagle was my favourite animal at the Zoo.

The scientific and common names of this species come from the Greek word, harpe, referring to a bird of prey that was written about by many Greek scholars, and may also be correlated with the mythological harpies who were winged creatures with extremely sharp claws, a woman’s face, and a vulture’s body. The Belize Zoo is trying to re-introduce Harpy Eagles into the wild in Belize and have already released a couple into the Mountains.

Abi & a Tapir. The tapir, known as the "mountain cow" in Belize, are forest dwellers, active mostly at night as they forage along river banks and forest clearings.

The kinkajou, known as the "night walker" in Belize, is a nocturnal animal which lives among the upper canopy of the tropical forest. They feed mainly on fruit and insects. In the dry season of Belize, they often eat flowers for their nectar.

Ocelots are nocturnal and diurnal, feeding mainly on the ground. Found in all tropical forests, rarely does the ocelot climb trees though it is an excellent climber. During the night, they tend to hunt along open trails, while during the day, the stay hidden within the deeper bush. This is the most comely seen of all the cats in Belize.

Jaguars hunt mainly on the ground and mainly at night. Its food consists of everything from mice to birds to tapir. Its favorite food in Belize is probably the warrie, which lives in abundance throughtout the Jaguars habitat. Jaguars once lived throughout the Americas, from Arizona to the north to Argentina in e south. But hunting and forest clearing has reduced their numbers and forced them out of their habitat into interaction with man. Belize has one of the healthiest populations in Central America, and the Jaguar is protected from hunting throughout Belize.

The Morelet's Crocodile is a small crocodile, seldom exceeding 10 feet in length. There are reports of individuals reaching 14 feet. These larger animals can be considered dangerous to humans. This crocdile primarily inhabits freshwater lakes, rivers and ponds. The female will build a large nest of twigs and rotting vegetation and lay up to 3 dozen eggs.

Jaguars are found throughout Belize in the lowland forests and along the coasts. Adult jaguars are solitary and only come together for a short time to breed. The size of a jaguars territory depends on food availability. In a forest such as the Cockscomb Basin, a jaguar will roam over a territory of about 20 square kilometers.

The Scarlet Macaw is arguably the most magnificent bird of the parrot family. With their wide strong wings, macaws can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. They often fly in pairs or small groups and often call to each other in raucous hoarse voices.

Here are a few pictures of the various animals to be found at the Belize Zoo and Abi, the cool girl I met who was volunteering at the zoo. Abi worked at the zoo for about a month and was a really fun girl, as can be seen from the pics. She really loves big cats and previously volunteered with Lions in Kenya!

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983, as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests.

Shortly after the backyard "zoo" began, it was quickly realized that its Belizean visitors were unfamiliar with the different species of wildlife which shared their country. This very aspect fomented the comitment to develop the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center.
Today, The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. The zoo keeps animals which were either orphaned, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as gifts from other zoological institutions.

A visit to the zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the animals of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. We hope this website will be the next best thing to visiting us in person.

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center believes that by bringing the people of Belize closer to the animals which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and want to protect them for future generations.

Here are a few pictures of me kayaking with Denver and Tiaja (a couple of local boys who's father is one of IE directors). The weather was a little cloudy but the water was lovely and warm and a little swell appeared near the end of the session. If you look at the little red boat you can see when I am emptying it that is has a glass bottom, great for watching the coral and fish from!

A nice perk of this job is I get free use of our kayaks whenever I have a day off and will taking advantage of this a lot more this year. Not far from our base there are a couple of inlets where you can paddle and see both Manatee and Crocodiles.

A few weeks ago I visited a Mayan Site called Xunantunich, which is one of the older Mayan Sites to be found in Belize and is very close to the border with Guetemala. In fact if you look at the pictures one shows a road in the distance and that road is the border. To get to the site you have to cross the river on a hand crancked ferry across the Mpoan River, which is fun.

Xunantunich is located across from San Jose Succotz, a few miles from the western border. The partially-excavated and largest pyramid, El Castillo, rises 130 feet above the main plaza and offers an impressive panaramic view of Belize's Cayo District and nearby Guatemala. El Castillo, is known for its frieze, a banded stucco decoration which at one time extended around the entire pyramid. The impressive museum displays a three-dimensional model of the entire Xunantunich site, as well as depicting the evolution of Maya civilization. Three stelae from the site are on display.

A few weeks ago I took a day off work and went out on our skiff for a visit to the Cayes (islands)just off Dangriga including Tobacco Range, Tobacco Caye and Coco Plum. It was a beautiful day to be on the water and I was happy to be visiting the Cayes once again. I had also hoped to visit South Water Caye (my favourite of the Cayes) but did not have time on this trip. Each Caye has its own unique charm and diversity. Our guests stay in either Cabannas on the islands or camp there, depending on the trip. Take a look at the pictures and imagine spending Christmas or New Years Eve out there........ wow!!! The close proximity to the Cayes is why Island Expeditions has its operational base in Dangriga.

The Garifuna Settlement Day is officially on November 19th but every year the celebrations start on Friday evening and go right through until Monday night. In Dangriga it is probably the biggest celebration of the year and this town of 10,000 can swell to double that size during the celebrations with visitors returning to their roots from all over the world.

The entire weekend consists of a lot of dancing, drumming, drinking and eating. Everywhere on the streets and in the bars you could see men and women doing traditional Garifuna Dancing plus a lot of grinding going on:)

On Sunday night I along with most people, partied until 5am and then everyone goes down to the waterfront and watches the reenactment of the Garifuna arrival by boat to Dangriga. Later in the morning there is a parade that goes through the town.

If anyone gets the chance to visit Dangriga over this weekend I can highly recommend it as it is an amazing experience, just don't expect to get much sleep:)

On Wednesday Nov 14th I headed out to Glovers Reef on our skiff to help set up our base camp on South West Caye. Glovers is our oldest and most popular of the two large base camps we operate in Belize, the other being our base at Half Moon Caye on Lighthouse Reef (my favourite).

Whilst at Glovers I saw Pelicans, Ospreys, Egrets, Sting and Eagle Rays, Tarpons and Barracuda's. Glovers is renown for its amazing and diverse animal and marine life that can be found on and around the island.

It was a lot of hard work setting up the camp but being out at such a pristine environment was well worth the effort, not to mention the clear blue skies, warm water, stunning sunsets and sunrises and the breathtaking sight of thousands of stars in the night sky! It truly is paradise:)

So I arrived back in Dangriga on November 6th and it is good to be back in the cultural heartland of Belize. I got a great reception and warm welcome from my many friends down here and the Belizeans proved again they are amongst the friendliest people in the world. Knowing so many people meant a big deal returning to Belize this time around and it felt good.

My first 2 weeks have been very busy with a trip out to Glovers Reef to set up our base camp and enjoying the three day party for Garifuna Settlement Day (please see seperate posts).

I've already been out to the Malibu Bar for a few drinks with my friends down here:)

So another amazing summer has come and go and now I am heading down for another winter season in Belize as Opps Mgr for Island Expeditions. Although I will miss my friends and family, I am looking forward to 5 months in this small Caribbean Paradise and seeing all my friends down there. It only seems like yesterday since I was boarding the plane to fly home last May and here I am all set to fly down again on Nov 6th.

Well, I managed to survive my first season in Belize and after almost 6 months in this beautiful country I returned home to Canada at the end of April. I had a awesome time in Belize and look forward to my return in November. The people of Belize are what make it such a special place and I returned home after making many strong friendships.

During my final week in Belize I got the chance to return to our camp at Half Moon Caye as I took a group of guys to help close the camp until next season.

Lighthouse is an amazing place and my time spent there with the guys was probably my greatest memory of my first year in Belize.

I am looking forward to returning again in November!

St. Peters Students Visit Crooked Tree School.

After Crooked Tree we then drove the students to Belize City where they boarded a boat that took them to Half Moon Caye for the start of a 6 day trip. Unfortunately, this time I had to stay behind but I knew I would be returning to Lighthouse soon.

When the game was over everyone gathered together to say their goodbyes and everyone agreed it had been an unforgettable experience. One of the greatest aspects of life in Belize is the friendly people that you meet everyday and the pupils at Crooked Tree proved once again that Belizeans are some of the friendliest people you will find in the world.

After the show the Crooked Tree pupils (and a three Belizean Guides) accepted a challenge by the St.Peters Students to a friendly, though spirited, Football game. Someone perhaps should have pointed out to the St. Peters students that Football is a huge sport in Belize, something they found out the hard way!! Though they had a considerable size advantage, the St. Peters students lost the game 2-1. Every one though had a great time and it was fun to watch the interaction between the Canadians and Belizeans.

For the finale the Crooked Tree pupils sang the Belizean National Anthem. I then made the St. Peters students get on stage and single the Canadian National Anthem, yes they all really loved me for that:) I have to say that the Belizean pupils did the better job, but you could not fault either group for their effort and enthusiasm.

After our tour of the classrooms we were invited into the main school hall where some of the pupils put on a special show for their guests. This show included some creole poetry, dancing and music, all very impressive. The pupils were a little nervous but the St. Peters students gave them plenty of encouragement.

The students were then escorted to several classrooms where they got to speak to the pupils and answer questions.

The students from St. Peters had brought a gifts for the primary school children and in the above picture the gifts were being presented to the children.

Here the students are being welcomed by the head teacher of Crooked Tree Primary School, who was explaining that her pupils were all very excited about this visit.

During my final month in Belize I did a lot of travelling to and from Dangriga and Belize City. One such trip saw me accompanying a group of students and their teachers from St. Peters to Crooked Tree School.

Here you can see the Eastern half of Half Moon Caye in the distance as we head back to Belize. This end of the island features a bird sanctuary that is home to Red Footed Boobies and Frigate Birds.

The Belize Audubon Society (who are responsible for the reserve) built this brand new dock at Half Moon Caye recently to make it easier for visiting boats to dock. It also make a great place for diving into the crystal clear warm water. The above three pictures are of our camp at Half Moon Caye, home for our guests for the next 6 days. With the white sand, shade from the coconut trees, access to various beaches, incredible snorkeling and even a Bird Sanctuary, it is not hard to see why Island Expeditions guests and staff love this amazing place.

These three pictures are taken from the boat as we first arrive at Half Moon Caye. After months of waiting to get out to Lighthouse these pictures show that the beauty of Half Moon Caye was worth the wait, it truly is Paradise!

These first two pictures show passengers aboard the boat during the 2 hour ride from Belize City to our base at Half Moon Caye. Water and plenty of sunscreen was a necessity as the sun was shining during the entire trip.

Ever since I knew I was heading to Belize I had been looking forward to visiting Lighthouse Reef Atoll and in early April I finally got my wish. As I had a breakfast meeting the following day I only got to spend about 30 minutes at our base camp at Half Moon Caye, but it was worth the 2 hour boat ride from Belize City to see this incredible island. Half Moon Caye is one of two Atoll base camps run by Island Expeditions, the other being our camp at South West Caye on Glovers Reef Atoll.

Lighthouse Reef was made famous by the 1970 expedition of the famous Jacque Cousteau to the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole is a deep, circular and incredibly blue sinkhole in the center of Lighthouse Reef and attracts divers from all over the world.

The Half Moon Caye Natural Monument was established in March of 1982. The was the first reserve to be created under Belize's National Parks System Act of 1981. Half Moon Caye is located at the southeast corner of Lighthouse Reef, the easternmost atoll of Belize's three atolls. Lighthouse Reef is located about 50 miles east-southeast of Belize City. The Caye itself is only eight feet above sea level and approximately 45 acres in size. The Caye is divided into two very distinct ecosystems. The western half of the Caye is densely vegetated. The soils are made rich and fertile by guano from thousands of sea birds nesting in the area. The eastern half by comparison is vegetated primarily by coconut palms and very little underbrush.

Here we are at the take out point at the end of the trip looking just how high the water level was. The day before the water was gushing over this old bridge.

Then it was Caits turn to tackle the same drop and as you can see she was pretty stoked to run this small (20') drop, good job Cait:)

These two pictures show me shooting one of the largest of the drops on the Moho and as you can see I was pretty happy when I managed not to get flung out of the boat, which was no easy task!

These two pictures show our camp, which is the second of the three camps usually used when running the Moho river with our guests. In the second picture you can see Cait preparing a nutritious dinner whilst the rest of the guys talk about the days adventure.

This first picture is of two of the Mayan guides, Pedro (at the front) and Camilio. In the second picture we can just about see Cait at the front of the boat (taking this picture) and our other Mayan guide, Greg, at the rear. These guys are expert paddlers and excellent bush guides.

Here Dave shoots one of the more demanding drops on his own. On these drops we would take turns running the falls whilst the rest of the team stood guard and ready to spring into action.

In December 2006 I travelled to the southern part of Belize with two of my North American Guides, Cait & Dave, and hooked up with three of our Mayan guides, Pedro, Camilio & Greg, to run the incredible Moho River.

This river is usually run over four days but as we were all experienced paddlers we did the trip in just over a day and stopped overnight at the second of our three camp sites. When we started this trip it had been raining hard for a number of days and the water level on the river was very high, which made for a great run. The Moho river is known for its many drops, some up to 20' and also has some sections of rapids up to grade 3/4.

It was an amazing run and one of the highlights of my first season in Belize!

Manatee Lodge and Manatees at Gales Point Nature Sanctuary

Last month we took a group of guests to Manatee Lodge, a remote lodge near Gales Point. On the way to the Lodge we stopped to look for Manatee's in the Gales Point Nature Sanctuary and got really lucky. A couple of Manatee's came very close to our boat, much to the delight of our guests.

Manatee Lagoons, also known as Northern and Southern Lagoons are located only 11 kilometers southwest of Belize City and 25 kilometers north of Dangriga. The entire protected area covers approximately 8250 acres. Average rainfall for the area is approximately 70 inches per year. The land surrounding the Manatee Lagoons averages about 10 feet above sea level.
The site consists of a variety of different habitats. Lying in the coastal plain, Manatee Lagoons are actually filling in from the erosion of the Maya Mountains. Within a couple of thousand years, it is possible that this area will be completely dry and covered with broadleaf tropical forests.

The Manatee Lagoons are known for the rich fauna found there. Jabiru Storks frequent the shallow shorelines to feed. The Central American River Otter frolicks up and down the rivers and through the entire lagoon complex. Very healthy populations of Morelet's and American Crocodile live throughout the area, from the highest reaches of the rivers to the coastline.

This area is an important breeding ground for waterfowl. Many of the surrounding shorelines are feeding grounds for ibis, egrets and herons. In Northern Lagoon lie two islands protected as crown reserves for nesting waterfowl. Ibis nest in large numbers here. Smaller numbers of egrets and herons also nest here.

One of the most noteable species in this area however is the manatee. Manatees are common all along the coast of Belize, but the highest concentration in the country outside of the mouth of the Belize River is in the Manatee Lagoon area. It is estimated that the Manatee Lagoon complex is the largest breeding ground for these docile creatures in the entire Caribbean Basin.

After their trip to the Jungle the student group headed out by boat from Dangriga to Glovers and then South Water Caye for the final part of their adventure in Belize.

Southwater Caye Marine Park is best known for the SCUBA diving. The drop off is a spectacular ridge running the entire length of the park. The longest unbroken stretch of the barrier reef lies within the park boundaries. And the areas among the mangrove cayes are some of the most biologically productive habitats in Belize. The students had plenty of opportunity to snorkel, kayak, sail, swim or just relax in the sun at both Glovers and South Water Caye.

Placencia

Last Wednesday I visited the Village of Placencia with one of my Guides, Jamie, who is from New Zealand. I had heard a lot about Placencia and how it has grown into a real tourist resort. There are a lot of large exclusive resorts being built on the outskirts of the main village, so Placencia is continuing to grow and attract more tourists. As a result the village has much more to offer tourists and visitors than Dangriga, but has less of cultural diversity and authenticity. Placencia is also a popular port of call for boaters, especially sail boats. You can even hire Catamarans from the main dock, for a hefty fee of course. Placencia has a nice long sandy beach with a couple of great beach front bars.

On Sunday April 1st I helped guide a group of students in the Jaguar Park Reserve Jungle at Cockscomb Park. It was quite the hike but the effort was worth it, especially the views of the Mayan Mountains and the waterfall. Our main guide was Greg Sho, probably the most experienced Jungle Guide in Belize.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1990 is world renowned for being the first jaguar reserve. This "one of a kind" reserve was established as a result of jaguar studies conducted in the area by Alan Rabinowitz. Besides being the home to Belize's largest cat, the Sanctuary protects the headwaters of two major river systems and supports an abundance of hardwood vegetation and a diverse faunal assemblage.

Over 128,000 acres of lush jungle are ringed by the spectacular Cockscomb Mountains. The wonders and diversity are accessible to both the casual visitor and the serious naturalist through a series of nature trails. These trails vary in degrees of difficulty ranging from an easy hour-long stroll along the river to a four (4) day challenge of conquering Victoria Peak . The Victoria Peak trail is only accessible during the dry season and requires a permit and a tour guide (experienced guides can be hired from the local communities buffering the sanctuary).

Return to Glovers!

So I got the chance to return to Glovers a couple of weeks ago and it has changed a lot since I was last there at the end of November. There is a new thatch at the end of the dock, which the guests love. The camp is looking great, especially the beach and the Tent Cabanas. I also noticed a big difference in the temperature in March compared to when I was last here and the water was especially warm. No wonder Glovers is such a popular destination for Island Expeditions guests, looking at these pictures you can see why. I've also added a few pictures of three of IE guides, Jamie, Mike (he is one of the Belizean guides) and Cait. The base camp at Southwest Cay, at Glovers Reef Marine Reserve was the first base camp set up by Island Expeditions.

Glover's Reef is the prototypic atoll of the Caribbean, and the best developed of all the atolls in Belize. This atoll possesses the greatest diversity of reef types and associated organisms of all the offshore reefs. The central lagoon of the atoll is unique because of its depth and the number of pinnacles and patch reefs carpeting the entire lagoon.
Glover's Reef is a prime example of an atoll. It is classified as an elongate rectangular atoll, 32 km long and 12 km wide with an area of 260 square kilometers. The waters outside of the atoll are exceptionally clear and the eastern side of the atoll feels the full force of the prevailing winds and waves of the Caribbean Sea.
Glover's Reef has six cayes, all lying along the southeastern side of the atoll. The cayes are arranged in a linear fashion along a NE-SW axis. They are composed mainly of coral rubble piled up by the strong wave action of the Caribbean Sea. The highest elevation is less then two meters with most of the islands having a depression in the middle which often fills with standing water. Like Lighthouse Reef, Glover's Reef is surrounded on all sides by a sharply defined reef which edges a wide reef flat. The atoll edges are steep on all sides, falling to water depths of 10,000 feet to the east. It is interesting to note that the reefs vary greatly from the eastern side of the atoll to the western side, which in turn are both very different from the patch reefs which pepper the interior of the atoll.

The patch reefs of Glover's Reef are relatively large in area, rise from the deep water, and are very numerous. A typical patch is round in shape with a very obvious zonation of coral. This zonation is very similar to those generally found among the patch reefs inside of the barrier reef. This leads scientists to believe that there is considerable wave action inside of the atoll.
As early as 1954, Glover's Reef was recommended as a bird sanctuary because of a breeding colony of white-capped brown noddies. Then in 1978, a United Nations consultant recommended that the entire atoll be declared an underwater preserve. Finally, in 1994, the entire atoll was zoned and declared a national park.
The zoning took into account that there is limited use of the atoll. Because of its remoteness, Glover's Reef is relatively untouched. A few local Belizean fishermen visit the atoll and some foreign fishing boats do also to collect lobster and fin fish. There are also a number of tourist operations on the atoll. A marine research center has just recently been established on Middle Caye.
In fact, it has been found that Glover's Reef was even utilized by the ancient Maya. A Preclassic Mayan settlement was discovered on Long Cay. Surface pottery and shards were located early-on during the survey of the atoll and its islands. Since Glover's Reef lies along the trade route between the Yucatan and the Bay Islands, use of these cayes probably occurred frequently. The zoning plan developed for the park takes into account all the current uses of the atoll, as well as the critical marine habitats. All marine habitats are protected while continuing to allow reasonable economic benefit through fishing and tourism.
But by far, the greatest attraction of Glover's Reef is the underwater world. Waters are crystal clear and the coral growth is spectacular. Huge coral spurs form caves, caverns and ledges. Eagle rays float over the top of the atoll edge, while huge schools of jacks, spadefish and snappers cruise by. The invertebrate life is vibrant and colorful. Glover's Reef is another of those gems that belong not only to Belize, but to the world.

Bird Caye

On the way back from South Water Caye we stopped off at Bird Caye to see the Frigate, Boobies and Pelicans that make this Island their home. It was an impressive, if some what smelly and noisy experience.

Along the northern boundary lies Man-O-War Caye, one of the seven crowned bird sanctuaries in Belize. The caye is covered with tall Red Mangrove. The interior is very wet and a dry coral sand beach exists on the southwest shore. But the most impressive thing about this caye is that it supports one of the ten largest colonies of frigate birds in the Caribbean. The island supports approximately 325 to 350 nesting birds.

The Southwater Caye Marine Park contains many varied and important habitats. Located about 10 miles due east of the mouth of the Sittee River on the mainland of Belize, the park covers approximately 62 square miles. The park runs from the drop off on the east side to extensive grass beds on the west side. The area encompasses 10 separate major mangrove cayes, two large mangrove ranges, a large twin caye formation, and many smaller islets. Most of the cayes are covered or fringed with mangrove, one of the most productive ecosystems in nature.
